What Is The Difference Between A Private Villa And A Holiday Apartment?

There are so many things that one has to take care of when planning a holiday; choosing the destination, finding the best airfares, making a list of to-do things, finding suitable accommodation, packing your bags, etc. Of all these, finding the right accommodation is crucial as it can make or break your holiday experience. Depending on one’s needs and budget, there are several options to choose from – like hotels, holiday apartments, luxurious private villas, or, if the budget is tight, some people opt for hostels. Many people who have a decent holiday budget are often in a dilemma about whether they should go for a private villa or a holiday apartment. Both are great options and by the look of it it may seem that there is not much difference, but in reality the subtle differences between these two accommodation types can make a great difference to your holiday experience.

To start with, let us first understand exactly what villas and holiday apartments are comprised of.

Holiday apartments basically range from studios to, at most, three bedroom units and are generally within small complexes. Like hotels, they offer a shared pool facility. Such an accommodation option comes with a functional kitchen or kitchenette that can come in handy if you would like to do some of your own cooking. Cleaning services by maids are offered by most while some apartments also offer an additional cook service. All in all, a holiday apartment is much like a hotel except they have a kitchen for guests to use.

On the other hand, a villa is usually a free-standing private residence which is often rented to holiday makers for certain periods of time. The sizes of villas and their features and amenities may vary considerably depending on the location. For example, villas can range from one to eight bedrooms, and they often come equipped with a private pool, fully equipped kitchen, large terraces, spacious living rooms, dining areas, patios and lawns. Some also have a kids’ playing area or recreational rooms. Most villas often provide full staff for housekeeping, cooking, etc.

A villa holiday makes for the ultimate luxurious and opulent holiday experience. It offers you the comfort and amenities that only few accommodations can match. Imagine not having to put up with the constant noise from other guests staying in the same holiday apartment complex. Imagine having a swimming pool all to yourself, and not having to follow any pool timings. A villa is essentially a home away from home. The best part is that a villa need not cost you significantly more than a holiday apartment. Whatever little extra you might have to pay is justified by the amenities and facilities you can take advantage of in a villa. In fact, if you are holidaying with a large group, the difference in cost can be nullified easily by splitting the cost.

There are times when the holiday experience matters most and if you can get it by paying a little extra, it makes total sense. For a memorable holiday experience choose a villa holiday over a holiday apartment any day.

Find Your Ideal Holiday – Villas and Cottages

Thinking about the right holiday accommodation for you ? We will discuss ideal holiday villas, good reasons to choose a villa and some of the drawbacks. When choosing a villa what are some of the important but less obvious considerations.

Choosing the right accommodation is the first key to a great holiday. This is not as straightforward as you might think and is worth putting in some thought. At the moment choosing a villa appears to be a very popular choice, there are some pros and cons that you should consider before going this route.

Fundamentally a villa is self catering accommodation. Yes, self evident you might think. Why do you want self catering accommodation?

  • Choice: I can cook what I want, when I want and still eat out too. Useful for say breakfast, especially perhaps with a large or young family (it gives you extra flexibility).
  • The kids can have separate rooms from the adults.
  • There are more living areas – the adults can spend evenings here – while keeping an ear open for the children. Often there will be T.V.s and DVD machines to help keep the kids amused.
  • Private pool? You can have a pool but without lots of other families (hell is other people or hell is other people’s kids – quite likely).
  • More flexibility and cost effective for large groups.
  • Villa can be more picturesque: you can choose locations that are less heavily populated or touristy.
  • Personal privacy.

Some good reasons to choose a villa. Now here are some reason to think again.

  • Self-catering also means all the effort that goes with it: buying the food, preparing the food, cooking the food and cleaning up afterwards. The Last time we did this one of the things we really noticed was the number of times we had to go shopping, we were always running out of something or needing stores for the next meal.
  • There are no chambermaids so you have to tidy up after yourselves.
  • Private pool: will it be up to scratch; how big is it ? What about keeping an eye on the children – there are no lifeguards. A surprising number of people drown every year in private swimming pools.
  • The kitchen is unlikely to be as well equipped as your kitchen at home.

With this in mind we have put together some points to think about if you are choosing a villa.

  • If one of the main reasons to go on holidays is to get away from the daily chores in life -then a hotel does this more effectively.
  • Location – if you are going to be self catering check the location of nearby shops
  • Check information on nearby resorts and beaches. this will give you a feel for the area. The last villa we stayed in was excellent but good local restaurants were thin on the ground as it was next to the German version of Magaluf.
  • Pool – try and check on size and quality. This gives rise to more complaints about villas than any other factor.
  • Be aware if you make a private booking through the internet: you will probably have pay by cash. Therefore you will have very little recourse in the event of complaints.
  • If you are planning to eat out a lot it could be more cost effective to go half or full board at a hotel even with 2 or 3 rooms.
  • Inspections of all villas and cottages is only as reliable as the local laws and the strength of any inspections provided by the company you book through. There could be unforeseen hazards and dangers in the property you book (ranging from faulty boilers, dangerous electrics to cracked and broken paving).

If we haven’t put you off booking a villa, then to ensure that you have maximum comeback and the best chance of getting the quality of villa or cottage you require then book through operators with a reputation to lose. In my next article I will discuss the pros and cons of staying in hotels and some of the main considerations when searching for your ideal holiday hotel.

Villas Giving Hotels a Run for Their Money

In ancient Roman civilization, a villa referred to a luxury residence in the country side that provided all the amenities required for a comfortable living. But in the modern context, a villa has almost become a substitute for accommodation in places of tourist attraction all over the world. Villas can be separate, independent bungalows, or they can be in the form of apartments. But in either type, they present themselves as spacious and cozy alternatives for a stay in a hotel. The favored locations for villas today are near sea beaches so that tourists can soak in a lot of sun and also enjoy all the water for relaxing vacations. One of the prominent reasons why villas as a concept have caught the imagination of tourists world over is the space and privacy that people can enjoy as the owner of the property for the duration of their vacations. This is a very relaxing and comfortable feeling which one cannot hope to get even in the finest of hotels where the rooms are not so spacious and one never is as free as he wants to be when he is vacating.

Today, sensing the requirements of the tourists and the increasing craze of villas, property owners in tourist places are converting their dilapidated structures into comfortable vacation homes. This does not require a lot of investment, and even if it does, is totally safe as villa rentals provide much better returns on investment. In some cases, investors themselves have some interesting proposals for property owners in such places whereby all the renovation is handled by the investor and the property owner gets a decent share from villa rentals and the property remains in his name as well. This works wonderfully well for the property owner as he starts to earn extra without having to make any investment.

There are countries that have become famous for luxury villas and attract a lot more tourists who are desirous of a stay in these villas apart from indulging in sightseeing in the country. Some of these countries are Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Ireland, Bali etc. In fact, Tuscany in Italy is one place where even celebrities plan their vacations just because of the presence of some of the most luxurious villas. Spanish villas are world famous for their grandeur and imposing structures. They have spacious rooms and their bathrooms and kitchens are fitted with the most modern and expensive gadgets. Some of the villas even have swimming pools which the tourists like very much as they can relax by the poolside having their favorite drink in the summers.

Two categories of tourists are today making a beeline for a stay in villas. One is the honeymooners who have a whale of a time in total privacy in these villas which is just perfect for them to have the most romantic days after their marriage. The other is families with kids who relax a lot with their kids roaming inside the property without any fear and also getting parked up in separate bedrooms.

Villas and Apartments in Spain For Rental in Tenerife – Ideal For a Luxury Winter Break?

The fantastic island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands is still very popular with people looking for villas and apartments in Spain for rental. In particular, there has been an increase in the numbers of people taking golfing holidays here and wanting to book a holiday in Spain villa. This is partly due to the fabulous mild weather that the Canary Islands enjoy even in the winter months and partly because of the investment which has been made by the local authority adding upmarket resorts and marinas. The local authorities realised that visitors looking for holiday rentals in Spain on the Canary Islands could not always find the type of holiday in Spain villa they wanted and they have spent a lot of money to rectify this.

Many towns have undergone a dramatic transformation from cheap package holiday resorts to a desirable location for the discerning traveller who is looking for upmarket villas and apartments in Spain for rental. For the last three decades the Canaries have been popular with British tourists seeking cheap winter sun. Unfortunately with mass popularity came mass construction of hotels, which were often built quickly and cheaply and started to give many resorts a bad name as well as the feel of a concrete jungle. Of course back then renting a holiday in Spain villa in the Canary Islands from the owners direct was not widely available.

Holidaymakers who stayed in Tenerife in the seventies and eighties would see a real change if they visited the island now. Gone are the concrete monstrosities built to cope with the influx of package holiday tourists, and in their place are buildings more in keeping with the surrounding countryside and exclusive villas and apartments in Spain for rental which can be booked direct from the owners. There is a definite increase in the number of visitors who want to plan and organise their own holiday and who are looking to book luxury villas and apartments in Spain for rental direct.

Could it be that cheap package holidays to places like Tenerife are finally on the decline? It is certainly true that, as more people have home computers and internet access, it is very easy to book your own holiday rentals in Spain direct with the property owners. Many people bought holiday homes in Spain in the last twenty years and consequently there is a fantastic choice of villas and apartments in Spain for rental direct from the owners. Most people find that the self-catering accommodation available to rent is often better quality than the similarly priced hotel accommodation.

Tenerife is only one of the Canary Islands which have undergone some updating. Another significant revamp has taken place on the popular island of Lanzarote in the resort of Puerto del Carmen. Holiday rentals in Spain are bound to benefit from the expensive facelift which has been completed in the harbour area. A modern marina with moorings for luxury yachts and a first class golf course have been built for the benefit of discerning visitors who are booking villas and apartments in Spain for rental or are considering a golf holiday in Spain. Even the shops, restaurants and bars on the beachfront are having a makeover to complete the transformation!

Exploring Chianti in Tuscany – Villas and Vineyards Galore

Chianti is a famous wine-producing region in central Tuscany. Villas to rent are popular and plentiful in the area, thanks to its picturesque landscape and languid lifestyle – complete with rolling hills and greenery as far as the eye can see.

But Chianti is a region that has so much more to offer – especially if you know where to go. Here are some top attractions and places to breathe in the area’s extensive natural and cultural beauty.

Castello di Verrazzano

There is a reason this particular site is one of the most popular attractions in Chianti, if not Tuscany. Villas in the area are surrounded with verdant vineyards, cellars are full of aging wine, and guestrooms are awash with medieval art, offering a holistic package for visitors to appreciate the best the region has to offer. A tour of the Castello is just 16 Euros – great value considering what you get from the package. You can top off your visit with a scrumptious sampler of three of the Castello’s most popular wines. An interesting snippet of information: a descendent of the Verrazzanos – Giovanni de Verazzano – discovered the New York Bay.

Monte San Michele Nature Park

Are you looking forward to taking in the natural beauty of Tuscany? Villas and hotels around this area will put you within easy access of the Monte San Michele Nature Park, where you can hike around and fully appreciate the flora and fauna of Chianti. Poplars, wild cherries, chestnuts, fallow deer, wild boar, porcupines, foxes, hares – there is just so much for the nature lover to enjoy while casually strolling through this lovely nature park.

Antica Macelleria Cecchini

While you might not think a visit to a butcher shop is an attraction, the avid foodies will revel in this particular one – the Cecchini Butcher Shop, located in Panzano. Dario Cecchini is an eighth-generation butcher who seeks to create the “Renaissance of meat.” He thus not only dedicates himself to perfecting the art of preparing good meat, but also in presenting it in a way that makes people look at food with much more reverence than they are used to. Dario has opened two restaurants as well. One, located above the shop is named Mac Dario, where you can eat a homemade hamburger and the full meal with a 1/4 lt of wine, a coffee and his homemade cake for just €13; then there’s his top restaurant L’Officina della Bistecca (the steak workshop) where he presents and cuts three different types of steak, cooks it in front of you on a big log fire and then serves it with his own special ritual. But one thing that really sets him apart from any other butcher in the world is that as soon as you walk into his shop you are offered a glass of Chianti and a taste of several of his product and it’s all free of charge. This is a true gastronomic experience not to be missed.

Church of San Leolino

Catholicism is prevalent in Tuscany. Villas and hotels may abound in the area, but so too do churches – in every shape and size. What makes the Church of San Leolino stand out is the history behind its simple Roman architecture. Built around 1,000 AD, this particular church eschews the glitz and glamour of its many peers for a serene, contemplative and humbling atmosphere. Still, the simplicity of the church is an elegant one and can stir the passions of those who enter within its walls.
